  7.    BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
  8.  
  9.       Warning:  Danger to You!  Be sure to turn off the computer's power
  10.       switch and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.  If you don't,
  11.       you could electrocute yourself.
  12.  
  13.       Warning:  Danger to Equipment!  RAM chips on SIMMs and other computer
  14.       components can be damaged by static discharge.  Be sure to ground
  15.       yourself by touching a grounded object such as a metal part of the
  16.       computer before touching your Above Board MC and your I/O Option
  17.       board.
  18.  
  19.    INSTALLING THE ABOVE BOARD MC
  20.  
  21.       1.  Note speed of SIMMs and install extra SIMMs if desired. All SIMMs
  22.           on the board must be the size: 256K bytes, 1M bytes, or 4M bytes.
  23.           Install 100ns or faster SIMMs, use 85ns or faster for best
  24.           performance. Install SIMMs in pairs for 16bit accesses, install
  25.           SIMMs four at a time for 32-bit accesses (only the PS/2 systems
  26.           that use an Intel 386DX or Intel 80486 CPU can take advantage of
  27.           32-bit accesses).

  29.       2.  Install Intel I/O Option if desired, (see "Installing your I/O
  30.           Option").
  31.  
  32.       3.  Insert the Above Board in the computer. This is accomplished by
  33.           turning off your computer and disconnecting the power cable from
  34.           the wall outlet. Removing the computer cover and then the
  35.           expansion slot silver end bracket (if you are unsure how to do
  36.           this for your computer, refer to the IBM Quick Reference guide
  37.           for your specific system). Insert the Above Board MC into an
  38.           empty expansion slot (in 32bit systems choose a full lengthed
  39.           32bit slot for best performance). Put the computer's cover back
  40.           on and reconnect the cables.
  41.  
  42.       4.  Boot to the backup copy of the IBM Reference diskette specific to
  43.           that system.
  44.  
  45.       5.  Answer 'N' to "Automatically configure the system?"
  46.  
  47.       6.  Choose "Copy an option diskette" to copy the Intel option
  48.           diskette to the Reference diskette.
  49.  
  50.       7.  Choose "Set configuration" from the main menu, then "Change
  51.           configuration" from the submenu.
  52.  
  53.       8.  Select a ROM address for the Above Board.  Only 1 Above Board MC
  54.           ROM  should be enabled, if you are installing more than 1 Above
  55.           Board MC.
  56.  
  57.       9.  Select the SIMM speed for the SIMMs on your Above Board.
  58.  
  59.       10. If you've installed an Intel I/O Option, select the port names
  60.           for the serial and parallel port.
  61.  
  62.       11. Save the configuration, exit and reboot your computer from the
  63.           hard disk.
  64.  
  65.       12. If you want the Above Board to supply only extended memory then
  66.           the installation is complete.
  67.           If you want the Above Board to supply any EXPanded memory, run
  68.           the Intel SOFTSET program.
  69.  
  70.       13. MCATEST is an Intel memory diagnostics program that can find
  71.           malfunctioning or improperly installed SIMMs on microchannel
  72.           Above Boards.

  74.       Above Board MC I/O Option
  75.  
  76.    BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

  87.       The Above Board MC I/O Option includes:
  88.       o     The Above Board MC I/O Option board
  89.       o     An end bracket
  90.       o     Two (2) thumb screws and washers
  91.       o     A tightening tool (not shown) for the thumb screws
  92.       o     A serial adapter cable (9-pin round to 25-pin D-shell)
  93.  
  94.       You will also need a small Phillips screwdriver with non-magnetized
  95.       tip to complete the installation.
  96.  
  97.       The I/O Option board includes a plastic shield on the back of the
  98.       board.    Do not remove this shield.
  99.  
  100.    IF YOUR ABOVE BOARD MC IS ALREADY INSTALLED:
  101.  
  102.       If you have previously installed your Above Board MC, perform the
  103.       following steps.  If you are installing both the Above Board and the
  104.       I/O Option board at the same time, start at "Installing your I/O
  105.       Option" below.
  106.       1.    Turn off the power switch for your computer.
  107.  
  108.       2.    Disconnect your computer's power cable from the wall outlet.
  109.  
  110.       3.    Remove the cover or side panel from your computer.
  111.  
  112.       4.  Note which expansion slot your Above Board is installed in.    Yo
  113.           u will need to return the Above Board to the same slot later.
  114.  
  115.       5.  Remove the Above Board from the expansion slot by:
  116.           o   loosening (but not removing) the board retaining screw.
  117.           o   grasping the Above Board by the upper corners and pulling
  118.           upwards.
  119.  
  120.       6.    Lay the Above Board on a clean, dry, level work surface.
  121.  
  122.       7.    Go to Installing your I/O Option.
  123.  
  124.    INSTALLING YOUR I/O OPTION
  125.  
  126.       1.  If you are also adding SIMMs to your Above Board MC, follow step
  127.           1 of Installing the Above Board MC before proceeding.
  128.  
  129.       2.  Remove the two screws and nuts that hold the Above Board end
  130.           bracket in place.  Keep the screws and nuts; you will use them to
  131.           attach the new end bracket.
  132.  
  133.       3.  Remove the end bracket and blue tab and put them to one side.
  134.  
  135.       4.  Remove the I/O Option, new end bracket, thumb screws, washers,
  136.           tightening tool, and serial adapter cable from their bags and lay
  137.           them on the work surface.  (Place the I/O Option on its anti-
  138.           static bag.)
  139.  
  140.       5.  Attach the new end bracket and the blue tab from step 3 to your
  141.           Above Board using the screws and nuts that held the original end
  142.           bracket.  Note that the bracket edge goes under the board.  It is
  143.           easiest if you first loosely attach the screw and nut on the
  144.           bracket end opposite the blue tab.  Now insert the other screw
  145.           and slip the blue tab over it before attaching the nut.  Be sure
  146.           the lock-washer side of the nut faces the board.
  147.  
  148.       6.  Holding the I/O Option at an angle, insert the oblong parallel
  149.           connector through the hole in the end bracket.  (The round serial
  150.           connector will be flush with the hole.)
  151.  
  152.       7.  Line up the pins in the I/O Option connector with the holes in
  153.           the Above Board connector.  Apply gentle even pressure to seat
  154.           the I/O Option in the Above Board connector.
  155.  
  156.       8.    Store the original end bracket.
  157.  
  158.       9.  Place a washer onto the threaded shaft of each thumb screw and
  159.           attach the thumb screws to the new bracket.  Use the tightening
  160.           tool to tighten the thumb screws.  Tighten the bracket retaining
  161.           screws. Failure to attach the thumb screws may cause your I/O
  162.           Option to violate FCC regulations.
  163.  
  164.       10. If you are using the serial port, attach the 9-pin round end of
  165.           the serial adapter cable to the serial port on the I/O Option
  166.           board.
  167.  
  168.       11. If your Above Board has not been configured (if this is a new
  169.           installation of the Above Board MC), return to Step 3 of
  170.           "Installing your Above Board MC".
  171.  
  172.           If your Above Board MC was previously configured in this system
  173.           continue with Step 3 of "Installing your Above Board MC", but you
  174.           it is very likely you can ignore steps 5 and 6 of that section
  175.           (if the proper backup copy of the Reference diskette is used, and
  176.           if the Above Board MC was put back into the slot it originally
  177.           was, you will not get prompted if you want to run the Automatic
  178.           configuration. If you do get asked this question, then follow
  179.           steps 5 and 6 as they are listed in "Installing the Above Board
  180.           MC".
